16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, more information to follow
"Violence against women both violates and impairs or nullifies the enjoyment by women of their human rights and fundamental freedoms... In all societies, to a greater or lesser degree, women and girls are subjected to physical, sexual and psychological abuse that cuts across lines of income, class and culture."
—Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, paragraph 112
Thanks Gaynor for posting on TAVASA about this important issue. One of the challenges that women in violent relationships face is how to leave, especially when they rely on the abuser to support them and their children financially. Where are they going to go? Who is going to provide a roof over their heads, food on the table, pay school fees for the children? And so, some of them stay, "for the sake of the children."
ReplyDeleteWhich is why I think it's very important that TAVASA members, who own their own businesses ( or plan to), and have a global client base ( which means they don't have to leave the house to go to work) can play an important role in being role models for women in abusive relationships.
